Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
