The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.
A freshly coined initialism came to light several months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is unique to Gaza, according to medical experts such as child health specialists. Typically, it is rare for medical staff to care for a child who has been bereaved of their complete family. However, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal in scores of doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.
An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Reported Truce
Gaza remains hell on earth. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that violations are still being committed. Authorities has denied these allegations, consistent with how it denies all charges it is charged with. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, apparently, is what unity looks like.
The contest, notably excluded Russia from competing in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.
A Selective Vision
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that global media are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy
The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the projected longevity of someone in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it once represented. A competition that once promoted harmony has transformed into a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
