Rybakina claimed the largest payday in WTA history by defeating top-ranked Sabalenka in two sets at the tournament.

The 26-year-old delivered a impressive display to beat four-times major winner her opponent in two sets in Saudi Arabia.

Since both players advanced through the event without a loss, the purse on offer was a historic £3.98 million – the largest payout offering in WTA history.

This amount exceeds the £3.74m Sabalenka earned for claiming the US Open, which was the most lucrative Grand Slam in the current year.

The champion, who was the sixth-ranked player, hit 16 winning shots during a commanding opening set performance.

The 2022 Wimbledon winner saved two break points before winning every point in the sixth game to take the break and served out to win the opening set.

With the second set on serve, the world number one defended two break points at 4-4 to shift the balance in her favour.

However, having worked so hard to disrupt Rybakina's rhythm, Sabalenka failed to capitalize by squandering two chances in the following game to tie the second set at 5-5.

Her inability to level the match affected her tiebreak performance, with Rybakina winning every point to take home the championship.

The victory, Rybakina's sixth over her rival, means she will rise one place in the rankings to number five in the world.

An emotional Sabalenka appeared to be in tears as she met with her coaching team soon after the final.

"That was not the best performance from me today but Elena you were definitely the better competitor," Sabalenka addressed the crowd.

"You really overpowered me on court. I'm happy to see you play your best tennis. Enjoy this stunning title."
