Prime Television Choices: Seven Essential Films In the Days Ahead

Highlighted Choice

The Substance Film

The filmmaker's bold commentary tackles the demanding standards for women's appearance as well as the perceived horrors of advancing years. Demi Moore presents a masterful portrayal as Elisabeth, a mature actress forced into presenting an aerobics show on the small screen. Pushed out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she seeks out a mysterious and gruesome treatment titled "The Substance". This generates a new version of herself portrayed by Margaret Qualley, leading to a steadily more vampiric relationship between them. October 17th, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This classic whodunit thriller includes Keira Knightley in the role of Laura, an ace reporter who decides to take a break from reporting on global conflict to embark on a high-end voyage alongside a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and donor, her partner, plus additional affluent individuals. Yet once an unknown lady falls into the sea during the evening and the entire crew claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Available now, Netflix

Presence

Soderbergh challenges his film-making abilities in this innovative paranormal narrative captured wholly from the perspective of a ghost. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their fresh home, the camera – AKA the Presence – follows them around. The daughter appears aware of the ghostly being, and the entity appears guarding her. But why? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, with a twist you might not see coming. October 11th, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere

This Self-Referential Film

The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom through this self-referential adventure. He portrays an egotistical Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who takes on a lucrative offer to attend a celebration in Mallorca for the wealthy superfan Javi. Hired by government spies to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, his “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone

The director's contained scarefest holds up well without requiring a continuation. Set in the late 70s in Denver, a series of child abductions has made the youth frightened. Once Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a dungeon, he anticipates the worst. However, the old telephone on the wall continues to ring, with eerie communicators offering help, and the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, the Film4 channel

This Dramatic Portrait

In the conflict between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for materialism in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky biopic of the disgraced televangelist and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who states initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple commence capitalizing on the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, bad makeup and hypocrisy, however Chastain achieves to show Tammy Faye with compassion. October 14th, late night, on Film4

The Spy Mystery

This week's additional entry by the same director presents a spy mystery as precise similar to the collars sported by the actor's British agent. He receives a mission to discover a traitor inside the organization from a group of five – one of whom is his spouse. Each performer are experts of calm composure, leading to a delightful mind game of fact versus fiction takes place. The supporting cast take part the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, various showings, the Sky channel
