Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the early candidates under consideration to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend after the team's 10-match winless start to the top-flight campaign.
Furthermore both candidates - each of whom have historic associations to the team - are part of the options to be considered by the club ownership.
Edwards is presently at Middlesbrough, which would create a possible obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton head coach - who played more than 100 of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a strong contender for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is said to have support from the Wolves directors as they start the search of hiring a new manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, even though he would be a shock appointment considering he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The former West Ham midfielder is out of work meaning Wolves would not need to provide any buyout fee.
