Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. It was kind of an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Context for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.
