A bulky bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the calendar year.

The winning offer for the 243kg fish came from the parent firm of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which operates restaurants across the country and overseas.

"The first tuna heralds good luck," commented the company president, a regular participant at the traditional new year's auction.

Known as the King of Tuna, this businessman is famous for submitting high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile new year auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Historic Precedent

After the auction, the winner admitted to reporters that he was "taken aback at the final price," adding, "I believed we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed in no time."

This most recent acquisition surpasses his own notable purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Even after once remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to surpass his own record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The inaugural auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally characterized by exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different sushi chain operator, which stated the fish would be served at its restaurants throughout the country.

The frenetic energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has transformed into a must-see tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

From Auction to Plate

The extremely valuable tuna was promptly processed for patrons at the entrepreneur's sushi restaurants shortly after the auction concluded.

"I feel like I've started the year in a good way after eating something so lucky as the year begins," said one elated customer.
