Aaron Rai Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Battle Versus Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai demonstrated remarkable nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff following a topsy-turvy final round of competition.
Rai sank a decisive birdie putt from just over eight foot to clinch the win, repeating his only previous tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win over the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Excitement
The champion entered the final round with a one-shot advantage over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under final round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger moved one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final green.
Play-Off Climax
This set up a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to take the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.

The Danish golfer carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his chances of leading the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Mansell produced an excellent final-round 63 to end up tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
